I feel like Chieftain is the most underwhelming ascendancy right now. There's really only one skill that it's overwhelmingly best at - RF totems - and one that it's competitive at - RF. What makes subclasses strong is either an overwhelmingly strong mechanic or a huge amount of synergy with specific type of skills. For the former, things like Inquisitor ignoring elemental resists, or old Shaper of Desolation, and for the latter, Deadeye's overall synergy with projectiles, or Pathfinder's massive amount of flask recharging.

Chieftain has 'totems are immune to fire damage,' and a number of the benefits it gets while utilizing it (taunt on hit, chance to ignite) are almost entirely worthless for that build. Even the minor skills are worse than Elementalist's or Inquisitor's. It doesn't even have the highest chance to ignite - Elementalist gets 100% for 4 seconds every 10, Pathfinder gets 40%, and I think a case could be made for Inquisitor being comparable in that regard. Its leech (and damage) are laughable when compared to Berserker, its tankiness is mediocre when compared to Berserker and Juggernaut. Chieftain either needs to be the totem subclass, the fire subclass, or something else. It needs a solid identity, not a fractured one. The class doesn't need buffs, it needs a total rework.

It's a bland generalist where half the benefits from any given node are wasted in any given build, when other classes can utilize vastly greater amounts of their given power. Both choices are honestly great. I've been doing Shockwave totems with it (total 80% added fire isn't too shabby!), and while not OP, it's tanky and solid, deathless t14's atm in so-so gear, even if it'll probably never take on Shaper (let's be honest, most builds can't unless cheesed a specific way).

I think it would be better if they weren't set up to only be burning, because there's definitely content out there that's immune to ignites, and that would pigeonhole it right back to RF if you wanted to do that content. I don't really know what I would want Chieftan to be (maybe based around scaling Strength for damage, like a free Doon Cuebiaryi strength damage mod). I agree with Guardian, I think they could use something to not be so dependant on a Shav's for so much of their strength. Just because you did it doesn't mean your setup is the most optimal setup for HC. Yes you don't need life leech when you're only farming Gorge and plateau pre 2.4. Also EA has massive, it's much better to heal yourself through life leech than life flasks. They nerfed elemental conflux it's not as strong. Pathfinder is the clear winner now. One ironic thing about my current RF Vortex Chieftain build is that it would work better as a caster Juggernaut than as a Chieftain. I want to be able to ignite myself so I get boosted by Eye of Innocence and Mokou's Embrace, but one of the passives makes me immune to ignite so the combo doesn't work. Also, I wanted to use Blade Vortex with Curse on Hit and minor added lightning damage to apply Elemental Equilibrium and curses to enemies, but another one of the Chieftain's passives also grants 20% of your physical damage as extra fire damage, and that messes up with the EE setup I have in mind. I'll respec into Jugger later on since the class has less permanent life regen passives and I can't sustain RF properly with it right now, but I wish I could use Chieftain so I didn't have to rely on Stone Golem and boot enchantments for regen.
